A void deck is the open, sheltered ground-floor space beneath many HDB blocks, used for passage, community activities and social functions.

Imagine an HDB block standing on columns so part of its ground floor stays open. That sheltered shared area lets residents walk through, meet neighbours or hold approved community and family events.
Where You’ll Run Into It
You may pass through a void deck on the way from a bus stop to a lift lobby. Some have seats, noticeboards, childcare or eldercare facilities, while others are kept open for flexible use.
Example
“Meet me at the void deck below Block 120.”
The person means the sheltered common area at ground level, not somebody’s flat.
The Part People Get Wrong
“Void” does not mean useless or abandoned. Void decks were created as shared spaces for circulation, shelter, neighbourly interaction and social functions.
