News reports may mention “heartland shops,” while someone planning a weekend may talk about exploring a heartland neighbourhood such as Toa Payoh, Tampines or Ang Mo Kio.
Example
“You don’t need to go downtown—there’s a good bakery in the heartland mall.”
The speaker means a mall serving a residential town outside the city centre.
Watch Out
Heartland is a flexible local description, not a precise administrative boundary. It usually points to suburban residential towns and the communities around them.
