The MRT is a network of train lines with stations across Singapore. You enter a station, follow the coloured line and station signs, and change trains at an interchange when your route crosses another line.
Where You’ll Run Into It
You will see MRT station names and line colours on maps, direction signs and journey-planning apps. Locals often describe places by the nearest station, such as “five minutes from Bishan MRT.”

The person is giving a rail route and expects the traveller to transfer at an interchange station.
The Part People Get Wrong
MRT and LRT are both rail systems, but they are labelled separately on Singapore’s system map. MRT generally refers to the main network; LRT lines serve shorter local routes in selected towns.
