Resale flat

HDB resale flat

Just Tell Me

A resale flat is an existing HDB flat bought from its current owner instead of directly from HDB in a new-flat sales exercise.

Also called: HDB resale flat

Explain Like I’m Five

Instead of applying for a newly offered HDB flat, a buyer chooses a flat that already has an owner. The buyer and seller agree on the transaction, then follow HDB’s resale process and eligibility rules.

How It Works

The seller registers an intent to sell and the buyer obtains the required housing eligibility assessment. They use HDB’s prescribed Option to Purchase, submit the resale application and complete the transaction through HDB’s process.

Where You’ll Run Into It

You will hear the term while browsing the HDB Flat Portal or property listings, especially when comparing an available existing home with a BTO flat that may still be under construction.

Example

“We’re viewing a resale flat near my parents this weekend.”

They are considering an existing HDB home being sold by its owner, not applying for a new project from HDB.

Watch Out

“Resale” does not mean there are no rules. Buyers and sellers still have to meet HDB’s prevailing conditions and follow its required transaction process.
