Just Tell Me

Cai png, also called economy rice, is rice served with a customer’s choice of prepared dishes displayed at a food stall.

Also called: economy rice, economic rice, cai fan, mixed vegetable rice

Explain Like I’m Five

At a cai png stall, rice is the base and you point to the cooked dishes you want from the display. The server portions them onto your plate or takeaway packet, then charges according to the selected items.

Where You’ll Run Into It

Cai png is common in hawker centres, kopitiams and food courts, especially at lunch. The display may include vegetables, tofu, eggs, meat, fish, curries and other everyday dishes.

Example

“Two veg and one meat, eating here.”

The customer is telling the cai png server which displayed dishes to add to the rice.

Watch Out

The price depends on how a stall classifies each dish, and premium items can cost more. Ask before choosing if the price is unclear.
